  • About the Edition

The future will reveal an ever increasing demand for crystals having highly specific properties while, at the same time, crystal growth systems will come to be increasingly restricted by environmental and budgetary constraints. If the technology is based on trial and error and the science restricted to irrelevant model systems, these demands will come into conflict. But if technological developments incorporate scientific understanding, then environmental, financial, material and fundamental perspectives often turn out to run surprisingly parallel. It is this integration of approaches to which Science and Technology of Crystal Growth aspires. Starting from basic physical and chemical knowledge, the reader is encouraged to build to the state of the art level, assisted by the many thousands of references to the original literature. The aspects covered range from mass crystallization technology to numerical modeling, from biological materials to fundamental physics, and from chemical reaction dynamics to the nonlinear dynamics of pattern formation. Audience: An ideal starting point for postgraduate researchers and process engineers. A high-level, interdisciplinary approach to crystallization.

Science and art of crystal growth represent an interdisciplinary activity based on fundamental principles of physics, chemistry and crystallography. Crystal growth has contributed over the years essentially to a widening of knowledge in its basic disciplines and has penetrated practically into all fields of experimental natural : Paperback.

The book can be used as an introduction to various important sub disciplines of the science and technology of crystal growth. Since, however the information content considerably exceeds a lecture note level and touches the present limits of understanding, it is an up to date handbook as well.

Unless the science of growing these crystals is understood precisely, it is impossible to grow them as large single crystals to be applied in modern industry. This book deals with almost all the modern crystal growth techniques that have been adopted, including appropriate case : William Andrew.

The vapor transport growth of silicon carbide crystals involves induction heating, electromagnetic field, radiative and conductive heat transfer, sublimation and condensation, chemical reaction, stoichiometry, mass transport, thermal stresses, as well as. Introduction. Science and art of crystal growth represent an interdisciplinary activity based on fundamental principles of physics, chemistry and crystallography.

Crystal growth has contributed over the years essentially to a widening of knowledge in its basic disciplines and has penetrated practically into all fields of experimental natural sciences. Growth of large single crystals of ruby from high-temperature solutions was attempted, but it was not possible to grow cuttable-sized ruby crystals until Vemeuille made a breakthrough that enabled large ruby crystals to be grown from the melt phase.

The chapter summarizes the main contributions of crystal growth to modern science and technology. Science and Technology of Crystal Growth by J. Van Der Eerden, available at Book Depository with free delivery worldwide.

Peter Rudolph is currently the coordinator of the technology department of the Leibniz-Institute for Crystal Growth in Berlin. His present research field is the growth of semiconductor crystals (GaAs, Ge, Si) in magnetic fields. Elsevier, a world-leading provider of scientific, technical and medical information products and services, today announced the publication of the new edition of the three-volume Handbook of Crystal Growth edited by Dr.

Tatau Nishinaga, Dr. Peter Rudolph and Dr. Tom Kuech. These combined works of reference present the underlying scientific foundation of the multi-disciplinary field of crystal. Unless the science of growing these crystals is understood precisely, it is impossible to grow them as large single crystals to be applied in modern industry.

This book deals with almost all the modern crystal growth techniques that have been adopted, including appropriate case s: 1. Experimental and theoretical contributions are published in the following fields: theory of nucleation and growth, molecular kinetics and transport phenomena, crystallization in viscous media such as polymers and glasses; crystal growth of metals, minerals, semiconductors, superconductors, magnetics, inorganic, organic and biological substances in bulk or as thin films; molecular beam epitaxy, chemical vapor deposition.
